Places
of Interest A pleasant town with comparatively slow pace,
Agra is known for its superb inlay work on marble and sandstone by craftsman
who are descendant of those who worked under the Mughals. The city is also
famous for its carpets, gold thread embroidery and leather shoes.
Agra was once the capital of the Mughal empire and even today it seems
to linger in the past . Not surprising , for the Mughal emperors with their
passion for building, endowed the city with some of the finest structures in
the world . It is very easy to slip away here through the centuries into the
grandeur and intrigues of the Mughal courts of the 16th & 17th century.
The Taj Mahal: The
beautiful proportioned octagonal structure topped by a perfect dome is
balanced by 4 soaring minarets that stand at the corners of the plinth . The
Taj Mahal is ethereal at any part of the day - blushing in the rosy glow of
down or sunset , appearing like a pearly mirage in the moonlight or
reflected in the pools of the garden . Perhaps the most moving view of the
Taj is from an octagonal tower in the Agra fort further along the river
Yamuna . It was here that the emperor shah jehan was imprisoned and where he
spent his last day gazing at the tomb of his beloved wife.
Heritage Sites: Sikandra is the tomb of Akbar,
the famous Mughal emperor. This tomb is 4 kilometers from the Hotel and is
one of the most spectacular monuments in Agra.
Agra Fort is
located within the city and contains a number of exquisite Mughal buildings.
Fatehpur Sikri is 38 kms from the hotel. This perfectly preserved ancient
city blends the best of the Mughal and Rajput architecture in red sandstone.
Gwalior is 119 kms from Agra. We recommend a full day trip to this
historic city which has the famous Gwalior Fort, Museum & City Palace.
Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary:
Keoladeo National Park is a one and half hour drive from Agra. This
birdlife sanctuary has one of the largest varieties of birdlife in India.
